Responsibilities
Role Overview
The Radio Operator acts as the primary communications focal point for the unit during working hours, as directed by the Unit Commander or their Deputy. The role is responsible for maintaining continuous and reliable communication between field operations and Unit HQ, ensuring accurate recording of all communications, and supporting operational safety, coordination, and reporting within the Area of Operations (AO).
Key Responsibilities
-Act as the communications focal point for the unit during assigned working hours.
-Maintain all forms of telecommunications (Radio and WhatsApp) with all HALO assets operating within the Unit AO.
-Accurately pass information to and from field teams and maintain a clear, complete, and up-to-date written radio log.
-Monitor and record all radio and WhatsApp communications.
-Ensure all information received from the field is correctly documented.
-Maintain daily attendance records for all operational field staff, including:
o Non-Technical Survey (NTS) teams
o Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) teams
o Clearance teams
-Act as the focal point between the field and the office in the event of:
o Accidents
o Safety incidents
o Situations requiring senior management involvement
-Track vehicles using GPS tracking systems to ensure compliance with HALO internal regulations and Syrian laws (once systems are available).
-Report any unplanned field situations, anomalies, or breaches of communication procedures to the Unit Commander or Deputy Unit Commander.
-Carry out any other duties assigned by senior management in support of programme operations.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge
The Radio Operator must demonstrate knowledge of:
-Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), orders, and instructions.
-Regulations, guidelines, and normative documents related to organisational activities and record keeping.
-Organisational structure and record management systems.
-Methods of document processing and execution.
-Proper use of communication equipment and technical devices.
-Principles of professional ethics, business communication, and work organisation.
-Labour safety rules and regulations.
Specific Vacancy Requirements
Skills and Personal Characteristics
- Good written and verbal communication skills in Arabic (Syrian dialect) and English.
- Strong ability to multitask and respond flexibly to changing situations.
- Understanding of the Syrian conflict and political context.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; willingness to learn new software.
