The Aga Khan Foundation in Syria seeks to employ an Education Lead for its office in Damascus.


JOB NUMBER: EDU/ 01

JOB SUMMARY:

The Education Lead provides strategic direction and technical leadership for AKF's education portfolio, aligned with AKF’s global education strategy and national policies and priorities. The Education Lead will ensure the quality, relevance and impact of the interventions from primary to secondary education through formal and alternative pathways. He/ she will be responsible for designing and overseeing programs that increase access to education, improve learning outcomes, including 21st century skills and strengthen education systems. The incumbent will report directly to the Education and ECD Program Manager.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Strategic Leadership and Program Development
- Develop and implement a comprehensive country-level education strategy aligned with AKF global strategy and the national policies and priorities.
- Provide technical leadership in the design and implementation of innovative Education programs aimed at increasing access and improving the quality of education.
- Contribute significantly to the development of concept notes, proposals, and budgets to secure resources for the Education program expansion.
- Foster strategic synergies between the education portfolio and other AKF thematic areas (e.g., Economic Inclusion, Civil Society, Health) to develop integrated programming.
- Promote a culture of learning and innovation within the Education domain, systematically documenting best practices and lessons learned.
* Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance
- Design and delivery of high-quality capacity building programs related to education interventions for AKF field staff, partner organizations, program trainers and facilitators
- Conduct regular supervision field visits to Education programs to ensure quality control, fidelity to technical models and monitor progress against targets.
- Provide technical expertise in pedagogy, curriculum frameworks, formative assessment, and the effective integration of technology (EdTech) in teaching and learning.
- Serve as the technical lead for Education, providing direct support and guidance to area offices during their annual planning, implementation, and review processes for Education interventions.
- Ensure that all education interventions proactively integrate and advance AKF's core principles of gender equity, inclusion for children with disabilities, and social cohesion.
- Assume primary responsibility for identifying and mitigating safeguarding risks within the education portfolio. Ensure all staff, partners and trainers and facilitators understand and adhere to child protection and safeguarding policies.
- Ensure that interventions comply with AKF’s safety, security, financial and administrative policies and procedures.
- Assist in the design and execution of education-focused needs assessments, baseline and endline evaluation studies in collaboration with the MERL team to inform programming.

* Partnerships and Collaboration
- Coordinate closely with area offices to support annual, planning and review processes for education interventions.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with government authorities, NGOs and international partners to influence policies and practices.
- Act as AKF's technical representative in national education coordination forums, working groups, and with key stakeholders as required.


Qualifications
- The applicant must have a Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, International Development, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in designing, managing and providing technical leadership for education programs in development or humanitarian contexts.
- Deep technical expertise in pedagogy, curriculum frameworks, teacher professional development models, and education system strengthening approaches.
- Strong understanding of the national education landscape, relevant policies, frameworks, and key government and civil society stakeholders.
- Proven experience in education program cycle management, including strategic planning, proposal writing, monitoring and evaluation, and donor reporting.
- 01Strong practical knowledge of 21st-century skills frameworks and EdTech applications is desirable.
- Demonstrated excellence in stakeholder engagement, partnership management, and representation.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with a passion for working with young children and their families.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and team capacity-building skills.
- Strong command of written and spoken English and Arabic.
- Proficiency in computer skills.
