Responsibilities
Key performance areas and main responsibilities:
Main responsibilities:
Create a warm, secure home
•Strive to turn the ‘house’ into a warm, loving, secure ‘home’ for the SOS children, e.g. by decorating it and adding personal touches. Plan recreational activities, games or family outings to build a sense of unity and belonging.
•Promote a warm, non-threatening atmosphere in which each child feels relaxed, happy, and able to express his joys and sorrows freely.
•Understand the background of each child in order to better understand his behavior and accept each child as an individual.
Act as the leader of the household
•Act as the central figure in the household, and set an example to the children by his exemplary behavior, patience and respect for others.
•Operate his home according to SOS principles and respect the role of other staff members such as the Village Director.
•Practice and teach the children basic life and communication skills such as conflict management, self-esteem building and forming relationships.
•Manage the household finances, ensuring that all funds are used responsibly and can be completely accounted for.
Ensure the well being of each child
•Ensure the physical well being of each child by providing a balanced, nutritious diet, by teaching personal hygiene, and by ensuring each child is properly clothed.
•Promote the educational development of each child by taking an active interest in their academic progress. Guide and assist the children in homework assignments etc. Participate in Parent-Teacher meetings and maintain regular contact with teachers.
•Understand and protect the rights of the individual child. Ensure a positive degree of discipline and respect is maintained in the home without resort to corporal punishment.
•Spend quality time with each child, taking a personal interest in his development. Provide parental advice and counsel to children with emotional or other difficulties.
Develop his own personal well being
•Maintain his personal physical, mental, social, and spiritual well being, thereby improving his ability to care for his children and to maintain a balanced life-style.
•Practice time-management skills to ensure that he has time for each child and is not overwhelmed by household chores.
•Participate in any training offered by SOS, and take an interest in reading or furthering his academic studies.
Perform detailed household tasks
•Carry out all basic daily household tasks including cooking, cleaning and ironing, with the support of the children and SOS Uncles.
•Maintain a high degree of safety, cleanliness and hygiene in the home. Monitor the condition and maintenance of his house, inform the Village Director of problems.
•Learn how to correctly use and care for household equipment and appliances. Strive to make economical use of water and electricity, and look for cheaper methods of cooking, cleaning and shopping.
Guide the children to independence
•Give the children age-appropriate tasks to do, ensuring they actively contribute as a child would in any family, e.g. by tidying their rooms or washing dishes.
•Encourage each child to further his education or training, to enable them to cope well when they leave the Village.
General
•Create opportunities to integrate himself and his family into the surrounding community, through playing an active role in community life. Become an active contributing member of the village community and the staff team.
•Attend village meetings and assist with general duties as required.
•Carry out all duties in an exemplary manner and provide a good role model for the children.
•Protect the children in our care from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse.
•Contribute in writing short stories about the village children for the national and international sponsorship programs which care about the details of the children stories and backgrounds.
•Handle all SOS property appropriately, including the financial resources of the organisation.
•Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Child Safeguarding (CS)
•Child protection is everyone's responsibility
•Responsible within own area of work to prevent and protect children of all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination based on SOS Child Protection Policy principles
•Responsible for reporting any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the national CS focal person or any other member of the national CS team and/or to the respective line manager

At least Intermediate institute degree with 2 years work experience in the field of childcare
